Visual storytelling is everywhere. To a large extent, in this digital age, it has become a context for our students’ everyday lives. So how do we maximize the learning and information students glean from the images they encounter everyday?
On Saturday, September 15, 2018, the Pulitzer Center will host a workshop exploring this question at the Social Emotional Learning Through the Arts Professional Development Institute, which is hosted by the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative and features workshops from arts and humanities organizations throughout the DC metro area. The Pulitzer Center-hosted workshop, Reading the World through Images: Cultivating Empathy, Global Competency and Critical Literacy through Visual Journalism, will showcase how teachers can engage students in developing empathy, global competencies, and critical literacies through the study of visual journalism produced by Pulitzer Center grantees. Session attendees are encouraged to bring their smartphones and wear comfortable walking shoes.
The institute will start at 10 a.m., with registration and a light breakfast available from 9:30 a.m. The Pulitzer Center workshop will be held from 1:10-2:40 p.m.
Upon registration, teachers will be able to receive a certificate for 5.5 contact hours towards PLU credits. Tickets are $10 per person, and every participant will receive a $20 gift card as well as a light breakfast and lunch at no additional cost.
In addition to a workshop led by Pulitzer Center staff, the institute will feature workshops from local arts and humanities institutions including Ford’s Theatre, Imagination Stage, Levine Music, Center for Inspired Teaching, Inner City Inner Child, Mary Hall Surface, Arena Stage, Project Create and Split This Rock. Gary Glazner of Poetry for Life will lead an interactive talk with the entire group. Space is limited–remember to reserve your seat today!
