Pulitzer Center Senior Producer Steve Sapienza participates in the Society of Environmental Journalists' 24th Annual Conference along with Pulitzer Center grantees Rhitu Chatterjee and Ken Weiss. Their sessions are on Wednesday, September 3, at the Conference, this year held in New Orleans under the theme "Risk and Resilience."

Weiss, a former reporter for the Los Angeles Times, discusses the complex connections between climate change and population dynamics during the morning session, "Risky Cities and Resilient Communities" event. Scheduled on the panel with Weiss are Roger-Mark De Souza, director of Population, Environmental Security, and Resilience at the Woodrow Wilson Center, and Toyosi Ogunseye, editor of Sunday Punch in Nigeria.

Later in the day, Chatterjee, a reporter for PRI's The World, moderates the “Storytelling in the Anthropocene: Picturing People and the Planet” session with Sapienza as one of the panelists who will discuss the power of visual media to convey how people live, their capacity for resilience in the face of change and how videographers and photographers document the connections between climate, population, and human rights. Others scheduled on the panel are Gladys Kalibbala, features writer for New Vision in Uganda, and Sean Peoples, multimedia editor and program associate in the Environmental Change and Security Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

These sessions are part of a day-long workshop titled, "From Nairobi to New Orleans: Reporting on Resilience, Climate Change and Population Dynamics," that explores how people across the globe, from megacities to small coastal communities, are confronting climate change and its challenges. Sapienza also will be the host for one of the SEJ Conference Beat Dinners at a legendary New Orleans soul food joint. At the "The Global Stories, Local Food: International Reporting" dinner event, Sapienza will moderate a discussion on opportunities for international reporting.
