The Pulitzer Center, along with Campus Consortium partner the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and Illinois Humanities, will host an evening focused on the struggle for justice. The conversation will span from the initial arrival of enslaved people in 1619 to the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people. 

Award-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones of The New York Times will begin the evening program with opening remarks on The 1619 Project. The evening will also include an expert panel of criminal justice advocates, journalists, and educators, followed by a Q&A session where Hannah-Jones will join the panelists. 

Remarks will be given by Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer, SAIC President Elissa Tenny, and Illinois Humanities Executive Director Gabrielle Lyon. The panel of experts will be moderated by Kristen Mack, Interim Director of Communications for the MacArthur Foundation, and will feature these panelists:

  • Norris Henderson, Founder and Executive Director, Voice of the Experienced
  • Sarah Ross, Assistant Professor, SAIC and Cofounder of the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project
  • Brian L. Frank, Photojournalist and Pulitzer Center Grantee
  • Jason Boulware (MFA 2016), Lecturer, SAIC
