Talks@Pulitzer: Fatal Extraction

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 - 05:30pm EST (GMT -0500)

Join us for a Talks @ Pulitzer on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, when journalists Will Fitzgibbon and Eleanor Bell share their investigation into the practices of Australian mining companies in Africa and the impact on local communities. Australia is a giant in African mining, but its vast–and in some cases deadly–footprint had never been examined until now.

Among their findings, Fitzgibbon and Bell report on the more than 380 deaths since 2004 that have been linked back to Australian mining companies and have gone underreported because of the wealth, power and influence in Africa of these companies. Fitzgibbon and Bell's reporting, the pair say, is giving a voice to "the other side" that often does not have the chance to speak out against what is happening to their friends and family.

As part of the Pulitzer Center-supported reporting project, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) used thousands of corporate records and created a special six-part multimedia presentation to detail how Australian companies can underreport deaths, injuries, legal actions or strikes. Never-before-seen court documents, legal complaints, community petitions, contracts and confidential company emails reveal the extent of Australia’s controversial imprint across Africa.
