With her Pulitzer Center reporting project, Bronstein explains that after decades of conflict Afghanistan is a country of war widows, with approximately 2.5 million widows overall and over 50,000 living in the Kabul area alone. Their hardships are increased by the fact that most are illiterate and uneducated. She shares the stories of these women, and girls in some instances, providing intimate portraits of the lives behind these numbers.
Bronstein's photography on war widows in Afghanistan has been selected for inclusion in PDN's Photo Annual 2016. Among other awards, Bronstein, when with Getty Images in 2011, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in Breaking News Photography along with Daniel Berehulak for their compelling portrayal of the human will to survive as historic floods engulfed regions of Pakistan.
She has also been an awards judge and has exhibited her work globally. Bronstein previously worked on staff for major US newspapers including The Hartford Courant and the Chicago Tribune before moving overseas to Bangkok. She then went on to work for Getty Images as a staff photographer for more than a decade.
