Join the Pulitzer Center at Texas Christian University on Thursday, March 22, 2017, for a Campus Consortium symposium focused on refugees, immigration, and border security.
Pulitzer Center grantee journalists include Nahal Toosi, Politico foreign affairs correspondent, Julián Aguilar, immigration and border security reporter for The Texas Tribune, and Robin Shulman, a freelance journalist and author based in New York. TCU speakers include Uche Onyebadi, chair of the Department of Journalism, Amiso George, associate professor of the Department of Strategic Communication, and Melita Garza, assistant professor of the Department of Journalism. Ann Peters, Pulitzer Center university and outreach director, also joins the conversation.
Toosi's project with the Pulitzer Center, The Rohingya Crisis, followed the situation of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims who have fled Myanmar and asks whether the United States could have prevented the humanitarian crisis. Aguilar dove deep into the largest federal land seizure in 25 years for his project, Border Fence Land Grab, and discovered ways in which the federal government skipped formal appraisals and legal descriptions, allowing the government to name its price for land along the Texas-Mexico border.
Shulman turned her focus to America's northern border, examining Canada's promise to welcome Syrian refugees and comparing that reception to the reception of refugees in the United States in her project, Canada and the U.S.: A Home for Syrian Refugees.
The symposium is an event in collaboration with the TCU Department of Journalism and as part of the Campus Consortium partnership between the Pulitzer Center and TCU's Bob Schieffer College of Communication. It is part of a two-day Pulitzer Center visit to TCU that includes class visits.
