Tow Tea at Columbia with Bregtje van der Haak and Atlas of Pentecostalism

On Thursday, February 27, join Columbia University Journalism Professor Ann Cooper for a discussion with Columbia alum Bregtje van der Haak on the Atlas of Pentecostalism, a Pulitzer Center collaboration with the Dutch journalist and information designer Richard Vijgen. Van der Haak discusses how the project was created, how the data was gathered, and more.

This unique and dynamic project uses big data and visual information to map the global rise of Pentecostalism, the most successful brand of Christianity today. Lagos, Nigeria, is the kickoff point for the reporting. One of the most innovative features of the project is how it brings together crowdsourcing, big data visualizations and documentary cinematography in an expanding online database. It also transforms into an eBook or print on demand book. As the website expands through crowdsourcing, the book grows and automatically integrates new contributions in the book design.

Cooper is an award-winning journalist and foreign correspondent with more than 25 years of radio and print reporting experience. In 1987, she was appointed as NPR's first bureau chief in Moscow, spending five years covering the final years of Soviet communism. Cooper also is the former executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists. Van der Haak is a Pulitzer Center grantee and documentary filmmaker and journalist. Since 1997, she has been directing international documentaries on social change, most recently for the Dutch VPRO Backlight series.
