The Pulitzer Center invites educators to join an interactive Zoom webinar and discussion on Wednesday, September 2 from 4:00–5:30 PM EST that will connect participants to Pulitzer Center education staff and each other to explore methods for using global news and reporting exercises this fall to increase students’ engagement, confidence, critical thinking skills, media literacy skills, and empathy.
The session will start as a Zoom webinar, where Pulitzer Center staff will lead participants in a brief exploration of our latest global news resources, lesson plans, and new opportunities including…
- Print, video, and audio reporting on issues including global responses to COVID-19, climate change, migration, racial justice, and more.
- Local Letters for Global Change: A writing contest for students
- Journalist-led webinars for students and teachers
- Printable lesson plans
- Instructional videos that introduce journalism skills
- The Fall 2020 Teacher Fellowship
The session will also introduce exercises from our instructional video series, called “Journalist's Toolbox.” These videos, and accompanying lessons, connect students to professional journalists to learn ways that they can use journalism skills such as descriptive writing, interviews, and photography to begin documenting under-reported stories in their homes and neighborhoods.
Following a brief Q&A with Pulitzer Center staff, participants will transition to breakout rooms. There, they will connect in smaller groups to network, and to brainstorm challenges and opportunities they anticipate this fall. Through guided exercises and open discussion, participants will work to identify opportunities for integrating resources shared during the webinar. They will also collaborate on a list of additional activities and resources that will be shared with all participants at the conclusion of the session.
