The Pulitzer Center education team and The University of Chicago’s Center for East Asian Studies invite teachers to join us for a webinar with foreign affairs correspondent Nick Schifrin on the impact of President Xi Jinping’s leadership on China. The session will include a presentation from Schifrin about his process for reporting on the project “China: Power and Prosperity” for PBS Newshour, a Q&A with Schifrin, and a presentation on digital resources that educators can use to connect students with reporting on China.
This webinar will provide tips on how to navigate reporting about China in the classroom with a balanced perspective and how to utilize coverage of the country as a platform to discuss civic liberties, the dynamics of global economic relationships, and the influence of technology on domestic and foreign policy. Participants will also explore Xi Jinping’s response to COVID-19 and China’s evolving relationship with the United States.
While this webinar is open to all students, as well as their teachers and guardians, it is recommended for grades 8–12, university students and educators. Educators will receive a 1-hour certificate of attendance upon completion of a short survey.

Nick Schifrin is PBS NewsHour's foreign affairs and defense correspondent. He has created week-long, in-depth series for NewsHour from Russia, Ukraine, Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Cuba, Mexico, and the Baltics. The series "Inside Putin's Russia" won a 2018 Peabody Award.
Prior to PBS, Schifrin was Al Jazeera America's Middle East correspondent. He has reported from more than 25 countries, covering every major story in the Middle East, as well as the war against Boko Haram in Nigeria. He led the channel’s coverage of the 2014 war in Gaza; reported extensively on the Syrian war from Syria's Turkish, Lebanese and Jordanian borders; and covered the conflict in and annexation of Crimea. He won an Overseas Press Club award for his Gaza coverage and a National Headliners Award for his Ukraine coverage.
