Pulitzer Center grantee Nicolas Pelham is a guest of the World Affairs Council in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, speaking about his most recent book Holy Lands: Reviving Pluralism in the Middle East and his own experience in the troubled region.
In Holy Lands, Pelham displays a unique perspective about the future of the Middle East–optimism. His reporting considers young mayors in Israel who are integrating Arab and Jewish citizens, clerics in Iraq who preach unity and the prime minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abadi, who champions the country's growing cultural life and its ability to bring people together. Pelham also looks at the quick downward path from the Arab world being a place of peace and understanding during the Ottoman Empire to the Middle East becoming one of the most volatile regions in the world today.
Pelham has over 20 years of experience reporting, living and studying in the Middle East. He is a Middle East Correspondent for The Economist and the New York Review of Books. While taking breaks from journalism, Pelham worked for the United Nations and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
