Award-winning street and documentary photographer Xyza Bacani speaks at the John Hopkins SAIS - Dupont Circle Campus on Saturday, June 9, 2018, as part of the Focus on the Story International Photo Festival.

Bacani focuses her talk on her Pulitzer Center-supported project, "Singapore Runaways," which dives into the world of migrant workers in Singapore and the exploitation and abuse some face. As part of her reporting, she uncovers a shelter in an undisclosed location, where hundreds of migrant workers from several other countries wait for their cases to be heard. Claims include physical and psychological abuse, human trafficking, and withholding of wages.

Bacani's photography shines a light on this often overlooked population. "Singapore Runaways" fits into her larger global project on modern slavery, which examines the intersection between human rights and migration.

The Focus on the Story International Photo Festival takes place from Thursday, June 7 to Sunday, June 10, with workshops, panels, book signings, and photo walks offered. To learn more about the programming and to register click here.
