Aryn Baker is TIME Magazine’s Africa Bureau Chief and international correspondent. Since joining TIME in Hong Kong in 2001, she has worked as a reporter, editor and correspondent, covering everything from the first Tibetan beauty pageant to Iran’s Paralympics volleyball team, Afghanistan’s collapse, the Arab Spring, the Syrian war, and the 2014 outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. She served as Afghanistan-Pakistan Bureau Chief from 2006 to 2010, then as Middle East Bureau Chief from 2010 to 2014.

Aryn has won numerous journalism awards for her work. She now covers African affairs and refugee issues from her base in Cape Town, South Africa. Prior to moving to Hong Kong, Baker earned her M.A. in Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, following a brief stint as a pastry chef in Paris. She was born in Los Angeles.
