Dana McKelvey, a senior at the College of William & Mary during the 2012-2013 Sharp seminar, is completing a major in Literary and Cultural Studies and a minor in philosophy. Last summer, Dana was a fellow with William & Mary’s D.C. New Media Institute, where she worked as a correspondent for the Diplomatic Courier, a publication that supports young journalists’ exploration of diplomatic life in D.C. and their analysis of international trends.

Dana’s interest in global culture stems not only from her work with the New Media Institute, but also from teaching English in the Monte Cristi province of the Dominican Republic with Orphanage Outreach in winter 2011, and traveling to Sarajevo, Bosnia in summer 2011 with the William & Mary Bosnia Project, a sustainable effort to teach English, non-violent communication, and creative media skills to Sarajevan youth with co-teachers from the University of Sarajevo and the NGO Creativus. Dana’s continued involvement in the region has included presenting a paper at the College’s annual European Studies conference on the destruction of cultural heritage sites during the Bosnian war, recruiting and training new team members for the Bosnia Project, and returning to Bosnia this summer to teach the media skills component of the Bosnia Project.
