Jacob Kushner writes about migration, conflict, and extremism, and he investigates foreign aid, corruption and extrajudicial killings in East/Central Africa and the Caribbean.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kushner graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's in journalism and Latin American studies. He spent two years reporting from Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and he speaks fluent Spanish, conversational Haitian Creole, and basic German and French.

His journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, VQR, Outside magazine, The Atavist, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, Pacific Standard, NewYorker.com, VICE, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, The Nation, WIRED, Playboy, Newsweek, OZY, the Associated Press, the L.A. Times, Guernica, Moment magazine, the Christian Science Monitor, and elsewhere. Several of his investigations have been supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

In 2017-2018 he investigated terrorism against immigrants as a Fulbright Fellow in Germany. He holds a master's in political journalism from Columbia University in New York, where he studied Chinese engagement in Africa and authored China’s Congo Plan, which was published by the Pulitzer Center and favorably reviewed in the New York Review of Books.
