Mark Hoffman

Mark Hoffman has been on the staff at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since 1992. He was hired as a picture editor before becoming deputy photo editor a short time later. After 10 years, in management he went back to his dream job of telling stories as a photojournalist.

Prior to coming the MJS, he was a photo desk supervisor & picture editor at New York headquarters of The Associated Press.

He also worked as a photojournalist at the Bridgeport (Conn.) Post & Telegram (now the Connecticut Post) and while in college he was a photojournalist at the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune, with internships at The Detroit News and Newsday.

Some of the International stories he has covered include: The struggle of Syrian refugees in Jordan & Germany and a Milwaukee doctor's mission to help them, the threat of zoonotic diseases with reporting in Uganda and Kenya, the civil war in El Salvador, the ongoing struggle of grinding poverty and corruption in Haiti, the environmental effects of oil sand mining in Alberta, Canada

Awards include: Part of the team that won 2016 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University award for A Waterhed Moment: Great Lakes at a Crossroads 2014 NFL photo of the year by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Part of the team recognized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration "Lifesavers" public service award for stories that examined the perils of drunken driving and Wisconsin's relatively lax anti-drunken driving laws.
