Nicola is a senior at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She is pursuing a degree in Broadcast Journalism with a social science concentration in Sociology, and a minor in Italian. Nicola will be spending her Fall semester at the Pulitzer Center as part of the Medill School of Journalism's Residency Program.

Originally from Puerto Rico, she is fluent in Spanish and Italian. Her passion for international journalism grew during her freshman year of college after attending a speech by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Paul Salopek. After hearing Salopek say that some of the most important, compelling journalism comes from the more ragged edges of the world, Nicola was inspired to pursue a career path that blends her interests in languages and Latin American cultures with her skills for multimedia storytelling.

At Northwestern she is a member of the Northwestern Community Development Corps, which has allowed her to tutor at Chicago public elementary schools, and teach English and citizenship classes to Mexican immigrants at Chicago's Centro Romero. Nicola used her experience there to create a video piece that profiled what the center does, and some of the people who go there.
