Peter Klein is a journalist and documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on global investigations. He is the founder and executive director of the Global Reporting Centre, a nonprofit journalism organization that innovates international reporting.

Klein was previously a producer at CBS News’ 60 Minutes, where he worked primarily with Mike Wallace and Bob Simon, reporting from around the world, with a focus on public health and national security. Klein’s investigation of the former Soviet Union’s smallpox program earned him and Wallace an Emmy. He was previously a producer at ABC News’ Law & Justice Unit, and he has directed, filmed, and produced several Nightline documentary projects, including: spending a year with a terminally ill man fighting for doctor-assisted suicide; following a registered sex offender from the day of his prison release; and documenting the recovery of a nurse who survived the bombing of an abortion clinic.

As a professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Journalism, Writing and Media, Klein founded the Global Reporting Program, in which students around the world collaborate on long-term reporting projects on under-covered global issues. Their first project was the FRONTLINE/World collaboration Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground, investigating the global e-waste trade, and was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a News Magazine. Other student projects have been published or broadcast by The New York Times, Toronto Star, The Guardian, Vice News, and Al Jazeera, and have earned recognition from major news organizations, including the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Society of Professional Journalists, Radio Television Digital News Association, International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, the Online News Association and Editor & Publisher.

Klein has an MS in Journalism from Columbia University, where he previously taught journalism. He and his family live in Vancouver, British Columbia.
