Ty McCormick

Ty McCormick is Africa editor at Foreign Policy magazine. He is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and roves the continent as FP’s chief Africa correspondent.

Stories he edited and assigned have won several prizes and awards, including an Overseas Press Club Award and the United Nations Foundation Prize. For his own reporting, he was the bronze medal recipient of the 2016 Elizabeth Neuffer Memorial Prize from the U.N. Correspondents Association and a finalist for the 2015 Kurt Schork Award for international journalism. In 2017, he was short-listed for International Journalist of the Year at the One World Media Awards in Britain.

He has reported from more than a dozen countries, including Egypt, Lebanon, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, South Africa, Mali, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Prior to joining FP in 2012, he was a freelance correspondent in Cairo, where he covered the 2011 Egyptian revolution and its aftermath.

He has written for The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, New Republic, and National Geographic, among other publications. He received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and master’s degrees from Oxford University and the Queen’s University Belfast, where he held Clarendon and George J. Mitchell scholarships, respectively.
