In Limbo: Kenya’s Exodus to Europe

Illustration by Chuck Todd / Global Press Journal.

Poor Kenyans are among the tens of thousands of Africans struggling to leave their homelands in search of a better life in Europe.

While many put their fate in the hands of smugglers who are strangers, Kenyans in one rural area rely on a woman who has built a career on safely transporting people from Africa to Greece, and then to Spain.

Global Press Journal Regional Editor Wairimu Michengi, one of the Pulitzer Center's 2015 Persephone Miel fellows, traces the path of Kenyan migrants as they move across Africa and into Europe, and the smuggler who makes their journey possible.
