Lack of education, insulin and essential supplies is of grave concern for youth with Type 1 diabetics (T1D) in Costa Rica—and testing for the disease remains inadequate. This project addresses the challenges Type 1 diabetic children, especially those living in rural areas, face each and every day. How do they test for the disease? How do they manage it? How does their experience differ from the treatment of those living in city areas?
Type 1 Diabetes in Rural Costa Rica
If a family is unable to pay for a child with Type 1 diabetes, only the most economical supplies are provided by the Costa Rican Government. This allows little to no flexibility in one's life.
26 Years and Counting with T1D
Daniela Rojas Jimenez's life mission is to share her experiences—both good and bad—with other T1D youth throughout Costa Rica.
Better Diabetes Care Available, Yet Few Can Afford It
Although many new and innovative products are now available to treat Type 1 diabetics, the majority of Costa Rican families cannot afford them.
