Donate NowRecently, Brazil and rest of the world saw how the use of fires and illegal deforestation has expanded in the Amazon. Although this is not a new problem in the region, much of the attention this year focused on the increase in both. INPE (the Brazilian Institute for Space Research) showed a 278% increase in areas with deforestation alerts in August. The number of fires registered also grew to over 28,000, well above the historic average of the last 21 years.
The idea of this project is to produce a series of three episodes, showing causes and reflections and pointing to existing initiatives that have helped to reduce deforestation in the region. The focus is on Pará, one of the Amazon states with the highest levels of forest clearing in the last few years.
The first episode will show how the economic development model is implanted in Pará. It has transformed Pará into a supplier of raw materials, exploiting it of its natural resources, with no regard for sustainable development.
The second episode will show how the advancement of deforestation in areas of environmental protection has contributed to the destruction of the environment. It will also cover the effects on climate and on the health of those living in the region.
The third and last episode will show local initiatives in sustainable development which have helped to diminish deforestation and how they could serve as the basis for a new development model for the region.

Desmatamento na Amazônia: Causas, Reflexos e Soluções
Nos últimos dias, o Brasil e o mundo tem observado o avanço das queimadas e do desmatamento ilegal na Amazônia. Apesar de o problema ser antigo na região, o que chamou a atenção, este ano, foi o aumento destas ações. De acordo com o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), do Brasil, em agosto, houve um aumento de 278% de áreas com alerta de desmatamento. Os registros de focos de incêndio também aumentaram: foram mais de 28 mil, superando a média histórica, dos últimos 21 anos.)
A ideia deste projeto jornalístico é produzir uma série de reportagens em três episódios, retratando causas, reflexos e apontando iniciativas já realizadas e que podem contribuir para minimizar o desmatamento na região. A série terá como foco o Pará, um dos estados da Amazônia Legal, onde mais se desmatou nos últimos anos.
No primeiro episódio será mostrado como o modelo de desenvolvimento econômico implantado no Pará contribuiu para o estabelecimento do papel de fornecedor de matéria prima e para a exploração dos recursos naturais, sem preocupação com o desenvolvimento sustentável.
Já no segundo, como o avanço do desmatamento nas áreas de proteção ambiental tem impactado na destruição do meio ambiente e quais os efeitos no clima e na saúde de quem mora na região.
No último episódio da série serão apresentadas iniciativas locais de desenvolvimento sustentável, que tem contribuído para diminuir o desmatamento e como podem servir de base para um novo modelo de desenvolvimento para a região.
