Femme Force: Women’s Contributions to Ukraine’s War

Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 precipitated the War in Donbass, which still rages on in the east side of Ukraine. Women from all over the country responded to the crisis. Historically, the military barred women from serving in battle so many women joined volunteer battalions to participate in the armed conflict. Some women joined the military despite the obstacles they face trying to find legitimacy in the Ministry of Defense. Others became involved by founding organizations and charity funds for military members, internally displaced peoples, children of the war, victims of violence, and more.

Taylor Damann interviewed more than 30 women who were motivated to take action.
