Living With Water

Rising seas and fiercer storms threaten to overwhelm flood protection systems that ring New Orleans and line the Louisiana coast.

The Netherlands, facing many of these same challenges, is realizing bigger and better barriers won't protect it from all the dangers of climate change. Instead, the country is embracing a nature-based approach, one that aims to live with water rather rather than fight it.

The Dutch say they have plenty of lessons for Louisiana, but the Bayou State has been slow to catch on.

The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate and New Orleans public radio station WWNO will travel to the Netherlands and produce a multimedia series on the innovative ways the Netherlands is coping with climate change and how their methods might be applied in Louisiana and other coastal areas.
