COVID-19, Ebola, avian flu, the bubonic plague. The spread of zoonotic diseases such as these is accompanied by an air of fear and mystery; but the mystery is shrinking. Studies have shown human populations experiencing repeated contact with wildlife and natural habitats as a proven formula for virus spillover. With a global health system stretched thin, the next pandemic could be unthinkably close.
