Rwanda: Climate Change and Mountain Gorillas

Climate change projections for Rwanda include an increase in temperature and a possible intensification of extreme flood and drought events. How will climate change impact mountain gorillas in Rwanda?

In northern Rwanda, communities with limited water often enter Volcanoes National Park to collect water. As people push into gorilla habitat, mountain gorillas are pushed higher into the mountains with limited access to their usual food sources and vegetation. However, the impact of climate change on local communities living in densely populated areas around national parks is generally unknown. This project seeks to explore the impact of climate change on mountain gorillas—and how local communities living around national parks are adapting to what they perceive to be climate change.
