Truck Crashes Dent East Africa Economy

In this project, journalist Beatrice Obwocha focuses on how road crashes involving heavy commercial vehicles impact the local economies in Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

Most of these countries are landlocked and rely on the Northern Corridor to ferry goods from the port of Mombasa.

This vital highway cuts across 11 counties in Kenya en route to other East African destinations.

Most of the crashes on this route involve heavy commercial vehicles. Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority reports that the Northern Corridor accounts for 18 percent of the country's fatal crashes.
