This Saturday, December 1, is World AIDS Day, a moment each year for special focus on the epidemic. Two hours away from American shores people face this epidemic daily. The Dominican Republic and Haiti boast the highest rates in this hemisphere of the virus that leads to AIDS. And it is a story that has been overlooked in the American mainstream media.

Pulitzer Center presents at international journalism conference

Pulitzer Center Associate Director Nathalie Applewhite presented at "Digital Media: New Ways to Do Journalism," the third annual International Conference of Journalists in Guadalajara, Mexico November 30 to December 2, 2007. The conference was a joint effort between the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.

South Sudan crisis ignored in midst of Darfur attention

An amplified focus on the genocide in Darfur has drawn international attention away from tragedies occurring in south Sudan, filmmaker Jen Marlowe said at a panel discussion Tuesday evening.

"The peace process that was started [in South Sudan] ... has been allowed to slide back into what looks like a slide back into civil war," Marlowe said.
