As part of efforts to better inform the public about new Panama Papers revelations from Africa, the Pulitzer Center supported development of "Continent of Secrets: Uncovering Africa's Offshore Empires," a new online game that tests players' knowledge of Africa and invites them to uncover the secrets hidden inside the Panama Papers.
Launched in April 2016 by ICIJ and over 100 media partners, the Panama Papers project delves into the secrets found in 11.5 million leaked documents from Mossack Fonesca, a Panamanian law firm that served as an offshore middleman for world political leaders and businesses hiding their operations from the public eye. The impact of the investigation was immediately felt by the world's governments, including Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, who resigned over allegations that his family hid millions in an offshore bank account after guiding his country through the aftermath of a banking crisis that saw a near total economic collapse.
Among the new details reported by ICIJ and its partners are hundreds of millions of dollars in suspected bribes paid for oil and gas contracts in Algeria, as well as activities in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mozambique and Togo, among other African countries.
