Alternative Education: Learning Through Living

Born out of dissatisfaction with the conventional education system, SECMOL, an alternative school located in Ladakh in northern India, is unique in many ways. Neither the school nor the students are ordinary—both have a story of their own. Based on a non-authoritarian learning model, the school is more than just a place to learn. It has emerged as an eco-friendly institution where students from small rural villages have found hope.

For the rest of the India, Ladakh is a beautiful tourist destination. But there are limited educational opportunities for the youth. Struggle and the pressure to follow the herd is a common experience. A group of young Ladakhis shared a vision to change it. The result was a school with no exams and no principal—and a successful education model.
