SMOKE SCREEN is an in-depth analysis of fire and deforestation data in the Amazon, exposing the intrinsic relationship between these two phenomena in the past two years. For months, a journalists team composed by Letícia Klein and Thiago Medaglia (text), Flavio Forner (photos), and Laura Kurtzberg (maps) plunged into the data of fire and deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest to conclude by the map and the numbers of National Institute for Space Research (INPE) that deforestation and burning did not occur independently of one another in the Amazon in the last two years. According to scientists interviewed by the project, fire is the last phase in the deforestation process, transforming the forest that was once there into ashes. The report breaks the false narrative that treats fire as natural in the region or as a direct consequence of cultural use by traditional populations.
CORTINA DE FUMAÇA é uma análise aprofundada dos dados sobre queimadas e desmatamento na Amazônia, expondo a relação intrínseca entre esses dois fenômenos nos últimos dois anos. Durante meses, uma equipe de jornalistas composta por Letícia Klein e Thiago Medaglia (texto), Flavio Forner (fotos) e Laura Kurtzberg (mapas), mergulhou nos dados de incêndios e desmatamentos na Amazônia brasileira para concluir pelo mapa e pelos números do INPE, que desmatamento e queimadas não ocorreram de forma independente na Amazônia nos últimos dois anos. Segundo cientistas entrevistados pelo projeto, o fogo é a última fase do processo de desmatamento, transformando em cinzas a floresta que antes existia. O relato quebra a falsa narrativa que trata o fogo como natural na região ou como consequência direta do uso cultural pelos povos tradicionais.
