(Washington, D.C.) On Saturday July 20th, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting launched a promotional giveaway of its two award-winning enhanced e-books for iPad: “In Search of Home” and “Voices of Haiti.” Both will be available for free on the Apple iBookstore until Sunday, July 28.
The giveaway coincides with the Building Learning Communities Education Conference 2013 (BLC), an annual education conference held in downtown Boston. BLC draws educators from around the world to foster discussions around innovations within the classroom. In its 14th year, the conference provides teaching resources and services to help reach scholastic goals, such as applying the Common Core standards to curriculum.
"We are excited to be a part of Building Learning Communities 2013 because education is one of the most important things we do at the Pulitzer Center. As part of our mandate to increase media literacy and global issues awareness, we constantly evolve to use new platforms and technology. That's why we're excited to offer our educational iPad e-books for free this week to BLC participants," Pulitzer Center Education Director Mark Schulte said. Schulte will be speaking four times at the BLC conference on global education topics.
“In Search of Home” depicts the lives of stateless people in Kenya, Burma, and the Dominican Republic. It features the photography of Greg Constantine and the reporting of Stephanie Hanes. It was designed and produced by Jake Naughton using Apple’s iBooks Author program. Interactive components were created by Maura Youngman. It won recognition for being a top e-book of 2012 from the National Press Photographers Association.
“Voices of Haiti” is a multimedia collection of stories, poems and music that immerses the reader in post-earthquake Haiti. With reporting by Lisa Armstrong, poetry by Kwame Dawes, photography by Andre Lambertson and music by Kevin Simmonds, it is a collaborative exploration into what journalism can look like on iBooks Author. The book was named one of the best e-books of the year by Pictures of the Year International Awards (POYi), and it was recently awarded a star by Kirkus Reviews, marking it as a top reviewed book.
The Pulitzer Center has a wide variety of educational resources available for teachers and students, including free lesson plans and unit maps. The Center also arranges visits to classrooms for journalists, which allows students to interact with global issues in a tangible and exciting way.
"We hope the e-books will be part of an educational technology toolbox for educators to use in the classroom for a variety of subjects," says Schulte.
