“Growing Up Through the Cracks,” a project by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that investigates child poverty and governmental dysfunction in southwestern Pennsylvania, received two honors at the Western Pennsylvania Press Club's Golden Quill Awards. The project won an Excellence in Written Journalism award in the Enterprise/Investigative category and the best-in-show Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for a daily publication.
Stacy Innerst, an editorial artist and illustrator, also won the Excellence in Visual Craft Achievement award for "Jared's Narrowed Life," one of the illustration packages included in the series.
With “Growing Up Through the Cracks,” supported by a grant from the Pulitzer Center, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette explored the causes and effects of childhood poverty. The project delved into a dozen communities in which half of the kids live in poverty and examined what other communities are doing to address the problem.
The series was also a finalist for the Knight Award for Public Service, one of the Online Journalism Awards.
