The Pulitzer Center welcomes Tom Hundley as Senior Editor and Kate Seche as National Education Coordinator. Tom and Kate will play key roles in strengthening the Pulitzer Center's work, bringing under-reported global topics to the broadest possible public and using journalism to engage college and high school students in the issues that affect us all.
Tom comes to the Pulitzer Center with 36 years of experience as a newspaper journalist, including nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. During that time he served as bureau chief in Jerusalem, Warsaw, Rome and London, reporting from more than 60 countries. He has covered three wars in the Persian Gulf, the Arab-Israeli conflict, the rise of Iran's post-revolutionary theocracy, the violent break-up of Yugoslavia and Northern Ireland's transition from war to peace. He has taught at the American University in Dubai and at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. He has also been a Middle East correspondent for GlobalPost and a contributing writer for the Chicago News Cooperative. Tom is a graduate of Georgetown University and has a master's in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania.
Kate has spent her career working in public education, first as an elementary school teacher and later as a curriculum specialist in the Washington D.C.-area. Most recently, Kate was co-principal and campus director of San Miguel School – Back of the Yards on Chicago's southside. Kate is a graduate of William and Mary University and holds two master's degrees, one from the University of Virginia (curriculum and instruction) and one from George Mason University (school leadership). Her studies and career have focused on serving high-need and traditionally underserved students: minority students, children of immigrants, and children living in poverty.
With the addition of Tom and Kate, the Pulitzer Center expands its capacity for editorial support and educational initiatives. The Center now supports over 50 enterprise projects each year, working with print and broadcast partners and with dozens of schools and universities across the country. We are grateful to the Kendeda Fund for an unrestricted multi-year grant that made these hires possible as well as to our core donors and other supporters who believe in our mission.
