Meet the Journalist: Susan Meiselas

Over the past decade, foreign investors have purchased land in Honduras near Trujillo, capitalizing on the newly developed port for cruise ships. The Garifuna community welcomes the possibilities of tourism, but its members are losing their land and culture. The Honduran government has argued that the Garifuna are immigrants and not indigenous, therefore having no rights to the land.

Susan Meiselas met people in the Garifuna community who have been threatened, beaten, and abused during their movement to recoup the lands. She is interested in this collision and also focuses on the women who are leading the Garifuna movement.
