Join Pulitzer Center grantee and Magnum photographer Moises Saman at the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism on Thursday, November 8, 2018, for a conversation about his work focused on documenting conflict.
In 2016, a force comprised of Iraqi soldiers, Iranian-backed militias, Kurdish peshmerga, and Sunni police attempted to retake Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, from the Islamic State, or ISIS. Pulitzer Center grantee Luke Mogelson traveled with Saman to the frontlines of the conflict for their project The Move to Mosul. Saman photographed and spent time with Kurdish fighters and others after they reclaimed Sinjar, a former ISIS stronghold in Iraq.
More recently, Moises and writer Michael Obert reported from northern Sri Lanka about the struggles of war widows who have lost their land and livelihoods in a difficult post-conflict society.
The Thursday conversation is moderated by 2018 UC Berkeley student fellow Caron Creighton and is part of a two-day visit to this Campus Consortium partner. Pulitzer Center senior producer Steve Sapienza travels to campus with Saman for classroom visits as well as formal and informal conversations with students and faculty.
