The Institute of Politics at University of Chicago in partnership with the Pulitzer Center welcomes journalist Scott Anderson for a discussion of his landmark piece in The New York Times Magazine, "Fractured Lands," which provides one of the most comprehensive accounts of the unraveling of the contemporary Arab World.

The event is set for Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Ida Noyes Hall on the University of Chicago campus. Jon Sawyer, Pulitzer Center executive director, joins Anderson for the discussion of the "Fractured Lands" project. Kerry Luft, former foreign editor of the Chicago Tribune, moderates.

"Fractured Lands" traces the lives of individuals across the Middle East who lived through autocratic rule, the invasion of Iraq, the turmoil of the Arab Spring, the rise of ISIS and more. Months of reporting culminated with Anderson's 42,000-word story, the searing black-and-white photography of Paolo Pellegrin and links online to Ben Solomon's virtual reality video on the retaking of Fallujah.

The "Fractured Lands" reporting project was underwritten by the Pulitzer Center's Catalyst Fund, an initiative aimed at fostering strategic partnerships between the Center and major news outlets to support work by freelance multimedia journalists on systemic global issues. The Catalyst Fund is made possible through the support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Kendeda Fund, and individual donors to the Pulitzer Center.

This discussion with Anderson and Sawyer is free and open to UChicago students, faculty, staff and the public. Registration on Eventbrite is required.

The event caps Anderson's daylong visit to the University of Chicago, which includes class and informal sessions with students and faculty, and is organized through the Campus Consortium partnership between the University of Chicago and the Pulitzer Center.
