The Pulitzer Center's Senior Education Manager, Fareed Mostoufi, will present at the National Conference on Magnet Schools in Baltimore on Saturday, April 13th alongside two of our teacher partners from R.J. Reynolds High School, Karen Morris and Pamela Kirkland. This presentation will explore NewsArts--an ongoing collaboration between the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and schools in Winston-Salem, NC that integrates news literacy, global competency and arts integration strategies into diverse curricula. Through exploration of data, student exemplars, and video, participants will learn how the NewsArts partnership with R.J. Reynolds High School has increased empathy, academic achievement, and community involvement.
They will examine how this partnership supported Reynolds’ engagement with the magnet pillars, and evaluate how their own schools could deepen engagement with the magnet pillars by connecting with organizations in their communities. Through collaborative writing and gallery walk exercises, participants will begin by brainstorming questions they have about connecting global news, the arts and community partnerships to their schools. Following a presentation on NewsArts, they will engage in hands-on visual arts, movement and creative writing activities developed by Pulitzer Center staff and Reynolds educators to guide students in making personal connections to global issues. By the end of the session, participants will evaluate how they can adapt NewsArts methods to support their own curricular goals. They will also workshop plans for developing collaborations with organizations in their own communities that support the goals they have outlined for the upcoming school year.
