For the past two years the Pulitzer Center has worked to bring attention to issues associated with gun violence, on the streets of Chicago and throughout the world. We have commissioned multiple reporting projects, placed stories in major media outlets, and sponsored forums among our network of university and secondary school partners as well as at the Worcester Art Museum.
On Monday, October 27, at the David Weinberg Photography gallery, we bring together photographer Carlos Javier Ortiz with Chicago-area students and educators inspired to connect global and local issues. Ortiz's work is on display at the venue.
"'We All We Got' explores the consequences and devastation of youth violence in contemporary America from 2006 to 2013, through a mix of powerful photographs, incisive essays and moving letters from diverse individuals affected by this perennial scourge...The stories take place in Chicago and Philadelphia. By returning to the same neighborhoods over the course of eight years, Ortiz shows the plight of the communities with which he has built a deep connection...Carlos Javier Ortiz is a visual artist who works with photography, film and text and specializes in long-term documentaries that focus on urban life, gun violence, race, poverty and marginalized communities."

Ortiz has received two grants from the Pulitzer Center to support his work documenting the causes and effects of gun violence in the United States and Guatemala. In addition to his reporting, Ortiz has worked extensively with the Pulitzer Center on education outreach projects in Chicago and Philadelphia, mentoring dozens of youth filmmakers and high-school photographers and discussing his work with hundreds of students in their classrooms.
At this gallery talk, hosted by Pulitzer Center Education Director Mark Schulte, you’ll meet a few of the Free Spirit Media teenage filmmakers who worked with Ortiz in Chicago, watch their short documentary and learn how his work inspired theirs. You'll also hear from a DePaul University partner who integrated Ortiz's work into an interactive photography project during her summer media workshop, Pasos al Futuro, and from an educator from the Chicago suburbs about the benefits of using global journalism in the classroom.
