Vanessa Gezari Discusses Her New Book: "The Tender Soldier"

Stephen James Lang, a member of a Human Terrain team, greets villagers in Pir Zadeh through an Afghan-American interpreter. After a quick hello, the Afghans returned to work. Human Terrain team members were mindful to not interrupt villagers for too long at a time when they were watering their fields. Image by Vanessa Gezari. Afghanistan, 2009.

Pulitzer Center-supported journalist Vanessa Gezari speaks about her new book, The Tender Soldier: A True Story of War and Sacrifice, on Thursday, August 15, in Washington, DC. Gezari's book expands on her Pulitzer Center reporting project, "Human Terrain: The New Counterinsurgency?"

The Tender Soldier has received significant pre-publication praise, including starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly. Lourdes Garcia-Navarro, NPR international correspondent, wrote of Gezari's work: "Gezari's gripping tale of American idealism gone wrong is vital reading for anyone interested in America's decade of war in Afghanistan. Beautifully told, the book illuminates one of the most interesting and little known programs in recent U.S. military history."

David Finkel, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of the New York Times bestseller The Good Soldiers, called Gezari "an unflinching journalist, and she has written a great, angering, and heartbreaking book that in its many layers is as damning as it is honorable."

Gezari now lives in New York and holds the James Madison Visiting Professorship at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She has written for The Washington Post, The New Republic, Slate, and others.
