'We Became Fragments' New York City Screening and Discussion

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, the Government of Canada, UNHCR, and The New York Times Op-Docs host a screening of the short subject documentary, We Became Fragments, followed by a conversation about youth and conflict led by journalist and author Janine DiGiovanni (The Morning They Came for Us: Dispatches from Syria).  The event takes place at the Scandinavia House in New York City, on the margins of the opening of the 73rd UN General Assembly.

After losing his mother and four siblings in a bombing that left him injured, Syrian teenager Ibraheem Sarhan and his father make a new life for themselves in Winnipeg, Canada, despite the heartbreak of leaving their home behind. It's a story about loss, resilience, and one young man’s identity as he adapts to a new country while his home is at war. 

Event panelists to include Raed el-Saleh, Head of the White Helmets; Ninette Kelley, UNHCR-NY Head and former UNHCR representative to Lebanon; filmmakers Luisa Conlon, Lacy ‎Roberts, and Hanna Miller; and government and civil society representatives on youth refugees and resettled youth.

The short documentary is the result of a competition sponsored by the Pulitzer Center, Op-Docs, and Tribeca Film Institute® (TFI) in April 2017.
