Donate NowOn Thursday, May 2, 2019, award-winning Associated Press journalist Maggie Michael joins Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer in Washington, D.C., for a focused conversation on Yemen. They will explore Michael’s reporting from a country plagued by protracted civil war, and grinding cycles of epidemic, starvation, and corruption, a perfect recipe for what has now become the world’s worst humanitarian disaster.
The Pulitzer Center has supported Michael and her AP colleagues, Maad al-Zikry and Nariman El-Mofty, in undertaking their reporting from Yemen. Their work features groundbreaking investigations of corruption, torture and other war crimes in Yemen as well as coverage of the developing humanitarian crises – from malnutrition to outbreaks of cholera and the collapse of infrastructure to assist civilians.
Among the honors bestowed upon the team: a 2019 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Michael also won the 2018 IRE Tom Renner Award and the team were runners-up for two awards for their Pulitzer Center-supported coverage of Yemen's civil war for the Associated Press, receiving citations for the Overseas Press Club Hal Boyle Award for best newspaper, news service or digital reporting from abroad and the Roy Rowan Award for best investigative reporting in any medium on an international story.
Michael has been reporting from the Arab world for the past 15 years, covering stories from Yemen to Egypt, where she currently resides.
