Several major media outlets are reporting on some of the most extreme violence erupting in China's western Xinjiang region in recent history - almost 1,400 people arrested and 156 killed in one day alone over the weekend. Today nearly 200 Uyghur people, primarily women, took to the streets to protest what they feel is unjust treatment at the hands of the Chinese government. And there are reports that in response Han Chinese vandalized Uighur property. Pulitzer Center journalist Ryan Anson visited the Xinjiang region some months back to document daily life and the unrest among the country's largest Muslim minority group.
