It is not only the Covid-19 pandemic that worries the residents of Jacareacanga, in southwest Pará. On November 4, the Secretary of Health of the Municipality sent a letter with a request for help to the Evandro Chagas Institute (IEC), a tropical medicine research agency linked to the Ministry of Health, in which it claims to go through a "very large outbreak of malaria in a designated area (in indigenous lands)." The document warns about the widespread circulation of miners and the possibility of further spreading the disease in urban and indigenous areas.
"As garimpeiros live migrating from one garimpo to another, malaria is spreading to areas of other garimpos of non-indigenous lands as well," informs the city hall in the office, which then points another factor of concern to the local health care system: "In addition to new cases, there is still a large number of relapses, being caused by interruption of treatment."
Não é apenas a pandemia de Covid-19 que preocupa os moradores de Jacareacanga, no sudoeste do Pará. No dia 4 de novembro, a Secretaria de Saúde do Município enviou um ofício com um pedido de ajuda ao Instituto Evandro Chagas (IEC), órgão de pesquisa de medicina tropical vinculado ao Ministério da Saúde, no qual afirma passar por um “surto muito grande de malária em área especial (nas terras indígenas)”. O documento faz um alerta sobre a grande circulação de garimpeiros e a possibilidade de espalhar ainda mais a doença em áreas urbanas e indígenas.
“Como garimpeiros vivem migrando de um garimpo para outro, a malária está se espalhando para áreas de outros garimpos de terras não indígenas também”, informa a prefeitura no ofício, que em seguida aponta outro fator de preocupação para o sistema de atendimento de saúde local: “Além dos casos novos, há ainda uma grande quantidade de recaídas, sendo causadas por interrupção do tratamento”.
