Islamists Take Somalia

As Ethiopian troops pull out of Somalia, much of the country is falling into the hands of radical Islamic factions. Although the story has been widely covered in newspapers, important details are being overlooked. Ethiopia's failed invasion of Somalia was essentially an American proxy war, fought with Bush administration support, and it was the result of a blowback from a CIA effort to control Mogadishu by buying warlords. Under a Pulitzer Center grant, David Case went to East Africa, and told the story in Mother Jones. Case is currently an editor at the international news Web site GlobalPost.com.
