What Happened to Crimea?

It’s been nearly a year since Russia annexed Crimea. In March 2014, Crimeans voted in a referendum where 97.6 percent were said to have voted to join Russia. Many countries have never recognized that vote. President Obama called the Russian annexation “illegitimate.” Journalist Dimiter Kenarov went to Crimea to report on annexation. In "Putin’s Peninsula Is a Lonely Island" for Foreign Policy he writes, “The place feels sad and forlorn-like an abandoned amusement park.”
