In response to Pulitzer Center reporting from Ethiopia, Bangladesh, China, and other countries facing significant struggles around the issue of water, the students of Nerinx Hall in St. Louis, Missouri designed and hosted a water awareness event this fall. The video footage of this "Water Haul" shows students carrying buckets or backpacks filled with weights to simulate the experience of women and children around the world as they collect and carry water into villages with no other access to freshwater.
This video is an ideal example of the student-produced projects we hope our reporting and Global Gateways program will inspire. The additional interviews with students on the Nerinx Hall InvenTeam, which was offered a grant from MIT to create a portable water treatment apparatus, make wonderful links to science and technology education and highlight local efforts to help stem a global crisis.
