Pulitzer Center journalist grantees Luis Trelles and Rolando Arrieta speak at the City Colleges of Chicago as part of a three-day visit March 13-15, 2018, focusing on their "A New Era in Cuba Migration" reporting project.
Trelles kicks off the visit on Tuesday, March 13, by joining a class on race and ethnic relations at Wilbur Wright College. Arrieta speaks the next day at Wilbur Wright before moving on to sessions at Harry S. Truman College where he also participates in a community forum.
"A New Era in Cuba Migration" examines the consequences of the Obama administration's end to the "wet foot, dry foot" policy in 2017. Reporting directly from Cuba, South and Central America, and the United States, the stories by Trelles, Arrieta and several other journalists associated with the project document the migration and humanitarian crisis that created a strain on resources and left 2,000 Cubans "in-transit" to the United States.
Campus Consortium partner City Colleges of Chicago is one of the country's largest community college districts and the largest in Illinois. The system serves students on seven campuses and six satellite sites.
The Pulitzer Center partners with City Colleges of Chicago to provide annual on-campus journalist visits and professional development workshops for students, faculty, and staff across the district. The Campus Consortium partnership, supported in part by the University of Chicago, also offers at least one international reporting fellowship to a City Colleges student to report on an underreported issue of his or her choosing.
