In 2016, Pulitzer Center-supported journalists Malia Politzer and Emily Kassie set out to explore the global impact of the biggest refugee crisis recorded in history. Their reporting took them to Niger, Italy, Turkey and Germany exposing the stories of the criminal masterminds profiting from the migration. They learned of stories about the smuggling businesses, the strategies of Sicilian Mafia, child workers and how governments in Germany are monetizing refugees.
On Monday, October, 16, 2017, Politzer presents "Refugee Boom and Bust: A Global Gold Rush" at Kent State University as part of its fall Global Issues Forum. Kent State is partnered with the Pulitzer Center’s Campus Consortium program, which helps engage students in international reporting and brings awareness to global issues. Politzer's presentation is part of a two-day visit to campus, where she is joined by Rebecca Kaplan, education specialist and Mellon/ACLS Public Fellow at the Pulitzer Center.
Politzer is an award-winning investigative journalist who has written stories about international development and the European economic recession and the refugee crisis. Her work has been published in The Economist, Mint, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, Reason Magazine and many more publications.
Politzer and Kassie won the 2017 Overseas Press Club Award for Best Digital Reporting on International Affairs for their Pulitzer Center-supported interactive Huffington Post Highline article, "The 21st Century Gold Rush: How the Refugee Crisis Is Changing the World Economy."
