South Sudan is the world’s newest nation, but ethnic violence, economic collapse, and famine have spiralled. Power-sharing between the two most dominant tribes broke down in 2013, and the country’s institutions fractured soon after.
Violence between warring sides has disintegrated into sporadic ethnic violence, all too often targeting civilians. Millions of lives, and the future of the country, are at stake.
As a PBS NewsHour special correspondent, Ferguson traveled across South Sudan, documenting the influences of these outbreaks of chaos, and how people struggle to survive the violence and hunger which ensues.
