Yvonne Wenger

Yvonne Wenger is a passionate, experienced enterprise reporter who covers poverty, social welfare and all matters that stand in the way of a thriving Maryland. In eight years at The Baltimore Sun, her award-winning reporting has ranged from Baltimore politics and governance to communities working to overcome the legacy of structural racism.

Adept at writing breaking news, features and investigations, she was on the ground for the civil unrest following the death of Freddie Gray. She’s broken stories about residents in danger of losing their homes because of unpaid water bills and earned the trust of public housing residents to tell several stories about a sex-for-repairs scandal. Her first-person narrative and podcast, The Wait - about her journey from infertility to foster parenting and adoption - drew a wide readership and won state and national prizes.

She previously worked at The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C., where she covered state budget and policy battles for six years. Her work there includes obtaining videos and police records to prove the long-standing pattern of abuse of black motorists by troopers that ultimately ousted the state’s highway commissioner. The series led to an NAACP presidential citation from the South Carolina conference.

Wenger grew up in Lancaster, Pa. and graduated from Bloomsburg University. She lives in Baltimore with her husband and daughter.
